What is dermal filler?

Dermal filler is a soft gel injected under the skin to add volume, shape or support. At Maison Aesthetics we use hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your body already makes, and the gel breaks down gradually over months. Silan carries out every filler treatment at the clinic.

Different fillers have different textures. A softer gel suits the lips, where movement matters. A firmer gel holds its shape on the cheekbones, chin or jawline. Silan chooses the product for each area and tells you which one and why.

Our approach is simple. Enhancing, not changing. Always you, just elevated. That means small amounts placed with care, and a plan that looks like you on a good day rather than someone else.

Should I choose 0.5ml or 1ml of lip filler?

0.5ml of lip filler, which costs £140, is the usual starting point for a first treatment. It gives a subtle lift in shape and lets you get used to the change. 1ml costs £190 and adds more visible volume. Silan will suggest an amount at your consultation, based on your lips and your goals.

A few points help people decide:

• 0.5ml suits a first treatment, thin lips that need definition rather than size, or anyone who wants a change friends won't spot straight away.
• 1ml suits lips that already have some fullness, or clients who have had filler before and want to build on it.
• You can start small and add more at a later appointment. It is easier to build up than to wish you had used less.

Lips often look bigger for the first few days while swelling settles, so judge the result after about two weeks.

Which areas can dermal filler treat?

Beyond the lips, Silan uses dermal filler on the cheeks, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds and marionette lines. One millilitre costs £180 for any of these areas. Larger amounts cost less per millilitre, from £300 for 2ml up to £600 for the 5ml full face package.

What each area does:

• Cheeks: filler restores volume on the cheekbone and can soften hollows under it.
• Chin: it adds projection and can balance a side profile.
• Jawline: it sharpens the line from ear to chin.
• Nasolabial folds: these run from the nose to the corners of the mouth, and filler can soften them.
• Marionette lines: these run down from the corners of the mouth, and filler can lift the shadow they cast.

What happens at my filler consultation?

Your consultation with Silan is free and comes before any treatment. It covers your medical history, medicines, allergies and previous treatments, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Silan looks at your face, listens to what you would like to change and explains the options, costs and risks in plain terms.

If filler suits you, you'll hear how much you would need, where, and what result is realistic. If it doesn't, Silan will say so. You can take time to think before you book the treatment itself.

Bring photos if they help you explain the look you want. Photos of your own face from a few years ago can be more useful than pictures of someone else. You can see some of Silan's work on our results page. Results vary from person to person.

What is the lines and wrinkles consultation?

The lines and wrinkles consultation is for clients who want to soften lines on the face and aren't sure which treatment suits them. Filler is not always the answer for lines. Silan assesses your skin and talks through the options, and a prescriber is involved where needed.

What should I do after my treatment?

After filler, expect some swelling, tenderness and possibly bruising for a few days. Silan goes through aftercare before you leave. Typical advice is to avoid touching or pressing the area, skip make-up on it for the rest of the day, and avoid hard exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours.

Other steps that help:

• Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night if your lips or cheeks feel swollen.
• Keep away from strong sun and sunbeds until any swelling and redness have gone.
• Allow about two weeks before you judge the final result.
• Book a review with Silan if anything looks uneven once the swelling has settled.

What are the risks of dermal filler?

The common side effects of filler are swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness where the needle went in, which usually settle within days. Small lumps or slight unevenness can happen. Rare complications include infection, an allergic reaction, and filler blocking a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. Silan explains every risk at your consultation.

You'll also learn which warning signs to look out for, such as pain that gets worse rather than better, skin that turns pale or dusky, or changes to your vision. If you notice any of these, contact the clinic straight away. A careful consultation and a practitioner who knows facial anatomy lower the risk, but no injectable treatment is free of it.

How long does filler last?

How long filler lasts varies from person to person. Lip filler often lasts around 6 to 12 months. Filler in firmer areas such as the cheeks, chin and jawline often lasts longer, sometimes 12 months or more. The product, the area, your metabolism and your lifestyle all make a difference.

The lips move all day, so filler there tends to break down sooner. You can book a top-up when you notice the shape starting to soften, often with a smaller amount than their first treatment. Silan will tell you what timescale to expect for your own treatment at your consultation, and there is no need to top up on a fixed schedule.
